German volume training: Meaning and How to Program It

German volume training

Definition

A hypertrophy method of ten sets of ten reps on one exercise, using about 60 percent of 1RM with a fixed rest period.

One main exercise per muscle, 10 x 10, 60 to 90 seconds of rest, at a weight the lifter could do about 20 reps with fresh. A 100 kg bencher uses about 60 kg. The first four sets feel easy, sets seven to ten do not, and the weight only goes up once all 100 reps are completed.

It is a shock block, not a program. Run it for four to six weeks on one or two muscle groups while everything else is maintained, then stop; the volume is far above what is sustainable and the fatigue accumulates fast.

Accessory work has to be cut to make room. Ten sets of squats plus a normal leg session is how clients end up injured rather than bigger.
