Full body split: Meaning and How to Program It

Full body split

Definition

A program where every session trains the whole body, usually two or three times a week with a day of rest between sessions.

It is the best structure for beginners and for anyone who can only train two or three days. Every muscle gets two or three exposures a week, technique on the main lifts gets practised often, and a missed session costs a fraction of the week rather than a whole muscle group.

Keep the exercise count low or the sessions run long. One squat pattern, one hinge, one press, one pull and one accessory is a complete session: squat 3 x 5, Romanian deadlift 3 x 8, bench 3 x 6, row 3 x 8, plus arms or calves. Roughly 50 minutes.

Vary the sessions rather than repeating one three times. Day A heavy squat and light bench, day B light squat and heavy bench, day C deadlift and overhead press.
